Texas Dragons Series DF65 at Bridgeland 5/20/17

16 sailors met in Houston at Bridgeland Lake on 5/20/17 to play with toy boats. The forecast was threatening storms rolling in a 1pm so we started sailing at 11am hoping to get some good races in. The wind varied from 0-12 and oscillated from SE to S throughout the day. The storms never materialized at least at the lake. This was the Texas Dragon Series 1st regatta where A+ rigs were available for use. There were a total of 3 A+ rigs on the water.

Throughout the regatta, the wind conditions were generally toward the lighter side favoring the A+ rigs. Because of this, I must give recognition to Phil Runquist and A.J. Moritz, two A rig only sailors, who both scored bullets via better sailing not more canvas. The racing was spirited and serious business but still fun as after all these are toy boats. At the end of the day, Fernando Campoverde, with his secret A+ rig tuning, won  first place by a generous margin. He was followed by Russ Gardner, Fred Sheldon, Phil Runquist, and A. J. Moritz. That lot, rounding out the top 5, were separated by a total of 4 points.  Fred got the position over Phil by tie break.

Also, I want to extend a big thank you to Mark Cooper. He had rudder issues with his boat first thing in the morning. He chose to RD for us the rest of the day. He called a good line for us and captured all the finishes for us.  Also, while I haven’t seen any photos yet, Lee Ray was taking photos during the regatta and hopefully we can get some posted at a later time. Additionally, I want to extend a big welcome to Lee Ray and Steve Schmidt who were both sailing in their first regatta. Welcome aboard guys!  Finally, thanks to Team Houston for hosting the regatta!

Texas Dragons in San Antonio

April 8th, 2017 Woodlawn Sailing Club San Antonio, Texas

Breakfast tacos were waiting on the skippers , bright and early, and that is always a fortuitous way to start a regatta. The forecast was calling for a warm, partly cloudy day for sailing, with 12-16 knots winds gusting up to 20 knots from the south, .  The forecast was correct.  South winds are perfect for this venue. For those of you who have visited this venue, it is a fun place to race and share an afternoon with sailors. Check out the backdrop across the lake.

This photo captures the Woodlawn Lake Lighthouse in the foreground, the Tower of the Americas in the deep background, and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower, that was registered in the  U.S. National Register of Historic Places,  and built in 1931. So with that as our backdrop, the racing commenced.

Our Race Committee was eyeing the line and clock was on. So the fun started.

See above, our excellent Race Committee. And yes, Sylvia was using that sighting tool to call the start line.

With 21 skippers pushing the start line, we finished 11 races in the four hour racing window with minimal stops for refreshments and damage control. A good time was had by the skippers and the racing was very close.  These boats are just so much fun to race. They are responsive and sail so smoothly. A beginner can pick them up quickly and a good skipper can make it dance. Also, Fred Sheldon took time out from racing to record and later edit a very nice drone video of the racing and AMYA El Presidente Seta ventured out in the RIB to capture some video of the DF95s racing at water level that was later compiled and edited by Chuck LeMahieu. Thanks to all for the excellent footage.

So on to the results. There were some very good skippers on hand for this regatta and as the score sheet bears out there was some good close racing. But at the end of the day Chris Macaluso edged out Chuck LeMahieu by one point to take the regatta victory. Bob Piper gets 3rd on tiebreaks over Brig North. And fashion maven, David Eldridge rounds out the top five, just a few points behind that.

Big thanks to Woodlawn Sailing Club, the Setas, and all the other help that made this a fun day in San Antonio. Looking forward to coming back and putting the 95 through its paces again.

2017 Round the Rocks Victoria Regatta

The 2017 Round the Rocks Regatta is in the books. Hosted by the Sun City RC Modelers and the Austin Model Sailing Club, the regatta was graced with a beautiful day to race and, for the most part, good velocity for most of the day. Wind direction on Berry Pond is always variable. ALWAYS. We did manage to only have to change the course once during the regatta and big thanks to Chris for manning the canoe. Chris also managed to paddle across the pond quickly to rescue a sinking Vic before it completely dropped to the bottom. Good news for the skipper who was able to continue racing the rest of the day. We had 21 competitors on the starting line and good racing was witnessed all through the fleet. As is usually the case on Berry Pond, the winds can be really test your mettle with at times one whole side of the pond going slack of wind awhile the others is sporting 6-7 knots. If you pick the wrong side you can watch half the fleet roll past you on one leg. Although to be fair, you might make it up on the next leg.

Not surprisingly, current Victoria U.S. National Champion Chris Macaluso took 1st with 18 points in 11 races including 6 bullets. Bob Piper put in an excellent showing scoring 23 points with 4  bullets. Frankly, these two were the class of the regatta as there was a bit of gap between them and Bruce Huckaba who took third with 52 points. Mark Cooper and Bud Garcia rounded out the top five with scores of 54 and 61 respectively. Bud also scored the remaining bullet.

Again, a big thanks to all who took time to travel to the regatta helping to make it a success! Also, a shout out to Lyle Bishop to keeping score and John Price for entering the score data.

2017 DF65 Texas Series Regatta 1

2/11/17 Sun City, Texas

32031992783_6fb49b29dd_o

The first DF65 regatta in the Texas Series was held today at Berry Creek Pond in Sun City, Texas. Conditions were ideal for the DF65, mostly sunny, 84 degrees, with predominantly south winds varying between 10-15 mph gusts occasionally over 20mph. There were 16 competitors from Houston, Dallas, and Sun City/ Austin. An interesting tidbit is that Chuck LeMahieu had a Ver.6 DF65 he raced today and, more importantly, everyone had a chance to look it over and ask questions. He trimmed the boat exactly following the new instruction manual and into the water it went.

We managed 12 races held with 2 throw outs. Chris Macaluso won the day with very consistent sailing and a very nice 5 race streak of 1st place finishes to seal the win. Mauricio Dantas sailed very strongly coming in 2nd with 8  finishes in the top two places. Chuck LeMahieu and the V6 finished 3rd overall, sailing consistently in the top 3 for most of the regatta.

There was a ton of solid competition as we knocked the rust off and put the DF65 through its paces. If I have messed up any names, please inform me so I can correct ASAP.

Fred Sheldon, one of the skippers, took time off from competing to shoot this drone footage. Thanks Fred. Fred Sheldon’s drone footage

2016 Texas DF65 Series Final Results

From Chuck:
2016 was a great year for the DF65 Fleet in Texas! Local fleets continues to add boats and since its inception we have new skippers come and sail nearly every race.

The TXDF65 Series had 53 skippers race in the 3rd year of our regional series, including 19 Masters competitors (65+), and 3 ladies in 2016!

The support for the series is what makes this special, and the fact that folks make the commitment to travel to other venues and race with fellow skippers is what keep our fleets growing. Every year it seems the fleet gets closer, and the sailing is more and more competitive.

Congratulations to Chris Macaluso from Lone Star Model Yacht Club for successfully defending his TXDF65 title for the third straight year!

Bill Foster from Lone Star Model Yacht Club captured the Masters Series championship edging out Fernando Campoverde.

The Series leaders would like to give special recognition to Russ Gardner & Fernando Campoverde for attending EVERY TX DF Series event this year! It is this kind of support and dedication to radio sailing in Texas that will keep us successful and growing! Thanks guys!

The plan is for each city in the regional series will host a 2 day regatta once during the year. Day 1 will be DF65s Day 2 will be DF95s ( just like the successful White Rock Cup Last year!) We will then alternate months with DF65 races & DF95 Races in each city.

Next year we will also add San Antonio to the regional series when they host a DF95 race in April!

Texas DF65 Series Regatta #7

From a sailing standpoint, it doesn’t get any better than the weather we had at the RG65 Region 5 Championship on Saturday in Lewisville TX! We had 15 boats sail, in 17 races , and we had including quite a few new skippers  to the fleet!
Winds out of the south at 10-15 and a really long course made for some exciting racing. Despite threatening clouds, the temps were great and we never got rained on.This event was a mixed fleet with Open RG65s sailing with the DragonForce 65s so we broke out the DF65s for a separate category. Team Houston dominated the DragonForce 65 scoring with Chris Macaluso winning the day, sailing on B rig half the day, closely followed by Bruce Huckaba, Craig Scott, & Ferrnando Campoverde capturing the top 4 spots in the DF65 Series scoring. Mauricio Dantas started the day sailing his home built RG65 but he ended up switching to his Df65 after race 6   so we scored him with DNS race 1-5  for TX DF65 Series points. TRYC welcomed our new transplant from Florida , Carlos Suarez, who borrowed my DF65 and did really well! The most exciting thing about this regatta was the number of new skippers we had sailing for their first RC sailing regatta ever! Ken Young from Fort Worth, Willie Smith from Carrollton, and two ladies Caryl Hugdahl and my fantastic wife Carrie LeMahieu. This brings our total number of skippers sailed in the Series up to 48 skippers this year!!! Our next TX DF65 Series event is in Houston October 15… hope to see ya’ll there!
